The National Disaster Management Office has initiated the activation of three evacuation centers in the Central Division to offer shelter to residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku in Suva. According to an official statement, families impacted by the situation are currently taking refuge in St. Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
Authorities are advising residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas of the Central Division to exercise caution, as heavy rainfall overnight has led to rising river levels and increased flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been partially activated, and the NDMO is collaborating with relevant agencies to closely monitor the unfolding situation.
The intense rainfall has resulted in flooding affecting towns and communities, as well as causing disruptions to minor roads and bridges. The NDMO reports that certain areas are also facing landslides, complicating traffic and overall mobility. They are urging the public in these impacted regions to refrain from unnecessary travel.
Public safety remains a top priority during this crisis. Residents who require assistance in reaching higher ground are encouraged to contact the Fiji Police Force and the National Fire Authority. The NDMO further advises against crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways, especially where water levels exceed knee height, due to significant safety concerns for both the public and emergency responders.
Additionally, floodwaters may be contaminated, and residents are warned to avoid direct contact with the water when possible. Public health risks, including leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue Fever, and diarrhea, increase following heavy rainfall, and the community is urged to remain vigilant.
