The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to shelter residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to NDMO, families are being accommodated at St. Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.

Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas are being urged to exercise caution as overnight heavy rainfall has led to rising river levels and subsequent flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been partially activated, with NDMO collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor the ongoing situation.

The intense rainfall has caused flooding in various towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reports some areas are facing landslides and traffic disruptions, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel in these regions.

The safety of the public is a top priority. Those needing assistance to reach higher ground are encouraged to contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority. NDMO is also advising people to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water level exceeds the knee.

This advice aims to ensure personal safety and reduce the risk of life-threatening situations for both the public and first responders. Additionally, floodwaters may contain harmful contaminants, so the public is cautioned to minimize contact. People should also be aware of the potential health risks of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rain.
