Evacuation Tensions Rise as Families Seek Extended Shelter Amid Flooding Fears

After recent flooding in Nadi, 190 evacuees are preparing to return home, although five families have requested an extra day at the Andrews Primary School evacuation center as water levels near their residences remain high. The flooding, which occurred three days ago, primarily affected families in the low-lying areas of Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements in Nawaka.

Despite the District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, directing families to clear out of the evacuation center by 3 PM, the five families are concerned about the potential for more rainfall and the necessity of ensuring their homes are safe before returning. Evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika shared that while most families have returned to their homes and started cleanup efforts, these particular families are anxious about the conditions and wish to delay their return.

Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the support they received during this challenging time, particularly highlighting the assistance provided by the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna religious group. Additional help came from the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, and various non-governmental organizations.

This situation underscores the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis, with many organizations stepping up to support those affected by the flooding. As the returning evacuees grapple with cleanup and recovery, their resilience and the cooperation from numerous entities provide hope for a swift return to normalcy in the region.

In summary, while the immediate challenge of returning home is upon the evacuees, the community’s support offers a glimmer of optimism as they work to rebuild and recover from the flooding.
