Evacuation Orders Amid Ongoing Flood Concerns in Nadi

Recently, 190 evacuees were instructed to return to their homes after seeking refuge at Andrews Primary School in Nadi, which served as an evacuation center following severe flooding in the area. However, five families have expressed a desire to remain for an additional day due to persistent high water levels near their residences.

Most evacuees were from low-lying neighborhoods in Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements. Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga had asked that all evacuees vacate the classrooms by 3 PM. Despite the concerns from the five families, who fear further rainfall, the evacuation instructions remained firm, with the majority already returning home.

Evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika noted, “After the flood, we kept checking on our houses and doing some cleanup too.” He also conveyed gratitude for the shelter provided, highlighting the support they received this year from various groups, including the Muslim community, Hare Krishna religious organization, People’s Alliance party, Frenzco Beverage Limited, South Pacific Foundation, and various non-governmental organizations.

This situation underscores the resilience and support within the community, demonstrating how collective efforts can aid those impacted by natural disasters. The cooperation among various groups is a hopeful sign that strong community bonds can facilitate recovery in challenging times.
