The National Disaster Management Office has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to provide shelter for residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to a statement from the NDMO, families are currently taking refuge in St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas of the Central Division are being urged to take precautions as heavy rainfall overnight has led to rising river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre has been partially activated, with the NDMO collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor the evolving situation.
The intense rainfall has caused flooding in several towns and communities, damaging minor roads and bridges. The NDMO reported that some areas are facing landslides and traffic disruptions, and they are advising the public in these affected regions to avoid unnecessary travel.
Public safety remains a top priority during this time. Those who need assistance in moving to higher ground are encouraged to reach out to the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority. Furthermore, the NDMO is cautioning individuals to stay clear of flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways, especially where water levels are above the knees.
It is vital to prioritize safety to avert life-threatening situations for both the public and first responders. Floodwaters may be contaminated, so the public should limit contact with these waters and remain aware of health risks such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rain.
