After the recent flooding in Nadi, 190 evacuees have been instructed to return to their homes, although five families have requested to extend their stay for an additional day due to persisting high water levels near their residences. Andrews Primary School in Nadi served as an evacuation center during the adverse weather conditions that have affected the area over the past three days.

Most of the evacuees were families residing in low-lying regions, particularly the Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements. Nadi District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, urged the evacuees to vacate the classrooms by 3 p.m. yesterday. Despite the concerns from the five families about the possibility of further rain, they were also instructed to leave the shelter.

Evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika expressed appreciation for the support received during this challenging time, noting that assistance has been notably better this year, particularly from the local Muslim community and the Hare Krishna religious group. Various other organizations, including the People’s Alliance party in Nadi and Frenzco Beverage Limited, have also contributed to the relief efforts.

The situation highlights the resilience of the community and the solidarity among various groups coming together to support those in need during natural disasters. As the families return home, there is a collective hope for a quick recovery and restoration of normalcy.

Summary: The recent flooding in Nadi has led to the evacuation of families, with a majority now cleared to return home despite a few requesting extra time due to ongoing water issues. The community’s assistance during this crisis has been commendable, showcasing unity and support in tough circumstances.
