After being advised to return home, 190 evacuees from Andrews Primary School in Nadi face a conflicting situation as five families have asked for an additional day of shelter due to ongoing flooding. The school has served as a refuge for those affected by severe weather conditions and flooding over the past three days, particularly people from low-lying regions like Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlement in Nawaka.
Nadi District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, emphasized the need for evacuees to vacate the premises by 3 PM yesterday. Most families are complying with the directive, although the five families expressed concerns about the high water levels near their homes and the potential for further rain. These families feel apprehensive about returning home hastily and are seeking an extension for their stay.
One evacuee, Veveni Waqamasinika, noted the gratitude of the community for the shelter provided and pointed out the support they received from various groups. This year, assistance came from the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna group, along with help from the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, South Pacific Foundation, and several non-governmental organizations.
Despite the concerns of the five families, the overall situation showcases the resilience and support within the community as they navigate the aftermath of difficult weather conditions. Collaboration from various organizations has contributed significantly to the assistive efforts in such challenging times, highlighting the strength and unity of the community during adversities.
Comments: It’s heartening to see various groups coming together to help those in need during natural disasters. This collaboration not only addresses immediate concerns but also builds community resilience. It’s a reminder of the importance of solidarity in the face of challenges.
Summary: 190 evacuees from Andrews Primary School are urged to return home following flooding in Nadi, although five families have requested a delay due to ongoing high water levels. Community support has been pivotal in aiding those affected, emphasizing solidarity and resilience amidst adversity.
