The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has urgently advised residents to evacuate during daylight hours due to worsening weather conditions. Since December 25, 2024, Fiji has experienced heavy rainfall caused by a persistent low-pressure trough, which continues to move slowly over the northeastern regions of the country. This weather pattern is expected to be exacerbated by another Tropical Disturbance, designated as [01F], located approximately 152 kilometers west-northwest of Yasawa-l-Rara.

The continuous rainfall has led to heightened soil saturation, increasing the risk of landslides and landslips. The NDRMO has cautioned drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution on the roads. The agency has also emphasized the potential for flash floods, urging residents to prepare for the possibility of evacuation.

In their advisory, NDRMO recommended that those heading to evacuation centers should pack essential emergency kits capable of supporting their families for at least two days. For individuals requiring assistance with evacuation, the NDRMO has advised contacting the Fiji Police at 917.

As communities come together in the face of potential disaster, there is hope that residents will stay safe by heeding these warnings and taking the necessary precautions. The government’s proactive measures are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of those in affected areas.

This serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters, and it is essential to stay informed and ready to act when necessary.
