The European Union has inaugurated its first-ever EU-Pacific Business Forum in Nadi, Fiji, signaling a significant step forward in strengthening partnerships with the Pacific region under the Global Gateway strategy. Peteris Ustubs, Director for Asia and the Pacific at the Directorate-General of International Partnerships, officially opened the forum, fulfilling a promise made by former Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen a year prior. The event aims to build bridges between European and Pacific business communities, fostering cooperation in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, aquaculture, and digital development.

The EU’s Global Gateway strategy is integral to this initiative, offering a comprehensive international investment agenda designed to create opportunities for major infrastructure development in partner countries. With over 330 participants in attendance, including business leaders from Europe and the Pacific, the forum highlights a commitment to collaboration and innovation. Participants traveled great distances to engage in discussions, sharing ideas and exploring partnership opportunities.

The forum goes beyond enhancing EU-Pacific relations, also encouraging intra-Pacific cooperation. It features an extensive agenda with discussions on business and investment topics, and delegates are invited to explore an exhibit area showcasing EU-funded projects in the Pacific. European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Josef Sikela, is expected to present preliminary results of the Global Gateway initiatives and unveil plans for further cooperation.

High-profile attendees include presidents from Palau and French Polynesia, ministers from the Pacific, and ambassadors from EU Member States, underscoring the importance of fostering sustainable trade and investment ties. The forum also advances the broader goals set under the Pacific Protocol of the Samoa Agreement, which emphasizes climate resilience, digital connectivity, and sustainable development.

By bridging these diverse regions, the EU-Pacific Business Forum seeks to test new waters and pave the way for improved economic collaboration, laying the foundation for a prosperous shared future. The focus on creating valuable connections and opportunities reflects an optimistic outlook towards sustainable development and resilience in addressing global challenges together.
