Etuate Qalibau, a 22-year-old playmaker, is making waves in the world of rugby as he joins the national sevens squad of Fiji alongside his elder brother, George Bose, who is a rover for the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team. Growing up in the village of Navosa with Bose, Qalibau never imagined that both would reach this level of achievement in their athletic careers.
His unexpected journey began after a standout performance while playing for Lavidi at the Namalata 7s in Kadavu last week, which caught the attention of Fiji 7s management. Qalibau expressed his disbelief upon receiving the call inviting him to join the national squad, but the reality began to settle in once he connected with the team days later.
Fans have rallied behind Qalibau, voicing their support on social media following his impressive display for Devo Babas at the Super Seven tournament two weeks ago. His remarkable skills were also on full display at the Rooster Chicken Grassroots 7s held at the HFC Bank Stadium, where he played a crucial role in leading Fiji Blue to victory over Vacalea in the final.
Having played for notable teams such as Yamacia, Devo, Tubarua, and Lavidi over the years, Qalibau describes the experience of being part of the national extended squad as a unique feeling, especially being alongside his brother. Bose has been a source of inspiration for him, encouraging him to dedicate himself and strive for a permanent position on the team.
With both brothers now on the path of achieving greatness together, there is a sense of hope and excitement for the future of Fiji rugby as they continue to make their mark. Fans are eager to see how Qalibau’s journey unfolds in the national squad and how he contributes to the team’s success on the international stage.
