Authorities are currently searching for a suspect who is believed to have fatally attacked a fellow inmate at the Savusavu Police Station cell on November 5. Reports suggest that the suspect and the deceased were held in the same facility, during which the suspect allegedly used a piece of timber to inflict lethal injuries.

Following a court appearance, the suspect was directed to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at St Giles Hospital. However, he managed to escape from the hospital, prompting a police manhunt, as confirmed by police spokesperson Wame Bautolu.

Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Suva to uncover the details surrounding the incident.

This unfortunate event highlights the ongoing issues within the detention system and reinforces the importance of safety measures in psychiatric institutions and police facilities. It serves as a reminder for law enforcement to bolster their protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

In summary, the search for the escaped suspect underscores the pressing need for improved oversight in correctional facilities, ensuring the safety of all individuals involved. With proactive measures, there is hope for a more secure and rehabilitative environment for those in custody.
