Epeli Leiroti: The Golden Ball Champion Who Shined in the Giants Battle

Epeli Leiroti of Lautoka was honored with the prestigious Golden Ball award at the conclusion of the 2024 Rooster Chicken/Scoops Ice-Cream Battle of the Giants held in Suva yesterday. The 29-year-old national representative was recognized for his exceptional performance that contributed significantly to Lautoka’s success in the five-day tournament.

Initially starting as a defender, Leiroti transitioned to midfield for the semifinal and final matches due to the suspension of Sitiveni Cavuilagi, who received a direct red card in Lautoka’s final group game against Navua. Having previously played for Nadroga, Suva, and the Fiji U23 team, Leiroti, who is also the elder brother of Aporosa Yada and son of former Lautoka and national player Josefata Malakai, showcased strong skills throughout the tournament in both defensive and midfield roles.

Coach Shivam Raj acknowledged Leiroti’s pivotal role in the team’s campaign, praising him for his leadership and work ethic. Raj stated, “He is a good leader and motivator in the team. His work rate is amazing. He gives his best for the district every time he steps on the field, and we are honored to have a player like Epeli.” Raj further highlighted Leiroti’s ability to mentor younger players and maintain composure during games, along with the contributions of teammates like Ilimotama Jese, Saula Waqa, Sakaraia Naisua, Zibraaz Sahib, and Antonio Tuivuna, who have all been instrumental in their victories this season.

For his outstanding contributions, Leiroti received a trophy along with a $1,000 shopping voucher sponsored by Extra Supermarket and Mirchi FM.
