Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has underscored the critical need for the police force in Fiji to be properly equipped and trained to confront the growing threats posed by illicit drugs and associated violence. In a recent discussion, Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted the alarming link between drug trafficking and armament, stating, “Drug is related to arms, and there is a significant threat related to it.” He stressed the inadequacy of current police equipment, noting that police can’t rely solely on batons when facing armed threats in the drug crisis.

Under Fiji’s legal framework, the police are permitted to bear arms, yet Tikoduadua pointed out that this requires a careful and thoughtful approach to ensure the right measures are in place. He expressed a preference for a police force capable of effectively managing threats, including those involving firearms, while emphasizing the distinction between police and military roles. “If you ask me personally, I would rather have a police wholly capable of dealing with a threat, including those that are armed and shooting at them, but in blue, not in green,” he said, indicating a desire for a dedicated police presence rather than military involvement.

Challenges in arming the police effectively were also addressed, with Mr. Tikoduadua mentioning that current limitations include the availability of appropriate arms. “The only thing is, because they do not have the arms. Police do not have the arms. They are empowered under law to be armed, but they do carry arms only in times of emergency,” he explained. He reiterated the necessity for the police to have adequate training and the right armaments, a concern that would be tackled as part of the police ‘reset’ initiative aimed at enhancing their operational capabilities.

Moving forward, Mr. Tikoduadua remains optimistic, stating, “The situation continues to evolve, and we’re going to look after the safety of our police. Hopefully, when they get to use arms, if they need to, they’ll be properly trained.” This initiative reflects an understanding that a well-prepared police force is essential for maintaining law and order in the face of evolving threats.

In summary, enhancing police capabilities is a top priority, particularly as the challenges related to crime continue to grow. The focus on training and equipping the police force not only aims at safeguarding their safety but also serves the broader goal of protecting the community. This proactive stance reflects a commitment to ensuring a safer Fiji for all.
