The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are set to increase traffic patrols and checkpoints at high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections to enhance road safety. This initiative follows a serious traffic accident on Kings Road in Vitogo, where a collision between a bus and a utility vehicle resulted in 18 people being admitted to Lautoka Hospital.
Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, expressed his condolences to those injured and emphasized the critical need for all road users to exercise vigilance and comply with road safety regulations. The collaborative efforts outlined in the National Joint Operations Order aim to boost road safety measures, reduce road fatalities, and ensure strict adherence to traffic laws.
This enhanced enforcement comes at a crucial time as the festive season approaches, significantly increasing road traffic due to holiday festivities, family gatherings, and celebrations. The operation will run from November 1 to January 31 of the coming year.
Notably, as of November 11, the total number of road fatalities in Fiji stands at 51, showing a commendable decrease from 71 fatalities recorded during the same period last year.
