The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are taking active steps to improve road safety by deploying additional traffic patrols and checkpoints in high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections. This initiative comes in light of a serious traffic accident that occurred in Vitogo, along Kings Road, which resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital following a collision between a bus and a twin cab utility vehicle.
Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, expressed his condolences to those injured and their families. He emphasized the critical need for all road users to be vigilant and to obey road safety regulations rigorously.
This collaborative effort between the LTA, the Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers is part of the National Joint Operations Order, aimed at enhancing road safety, reducing road fatalities, and ensuring compliance with traffic rules. Minister Tuisawau highlighted the urgency of these measures, particularly with the impending festive season, which will see an increase in traffic due to holiday celebrations and family gatherings. The enhanced operations will run from November 1 to January 31 next year.
Notably, as of November 11, road fatalities in Fiji have decreased to 51, a positive trend compared to 71 fatalities during the same time last year. This decline reflects the potential effectiveness of ongoing safety initiatives.
This joint initiative not only raises awareness but also reinforces the commitment of local authorities to ensure safer roads for everyone. With the festive season approaching, community vigilance and cooperation will be crucial in maintaining this positive trend in road safety.
In summary, this proactive approach aims to reduce accidents and promote safer driving practices, thereby protecting lives during a period known for increased road traffic.
