Australian renewable energy company Energy Estate is embarking on an ambitious expansion of subsea cable and digital infrastructure projects throughout Australia, with plans for a significant system that will reach as far as Fiji. This initiative aims to enhance international connectivity and position Fiji as a regional digital hub within the Pacific.
The company’s Energy Estate Digital Unit is spearheading the development of new subsea cable systems that will connect Tasmania to the mainland of Australia and extend further to the United States and Asia. Among the notable proposed projects is the CaliNewy cable, which is set to traverse from California to Australia, making landfall at Bell Bay in Tasmania. From this point, it will connect to Wonthaggi in Victoria and Newcastle in New South Wales, ultimately extending its reach to Fiji.
This forthcoming infrastructure is especially significant for Fiji, which is actively establishing itself as a center for digital services in the region. The introduction of a high-capacity international cable will not only enhance internet resilience and reduce latency but also provide vital support for data-heavy services. This development could solidify Fiji’s position in the trans-Pacific digital traffic landscape.
Since its inception in 2018, Energy Estate has successfully developed over 1.24 gigawatts of renewable energy projects and is now advancing the integration of data centers powered by clean energy. This strategic move towards improved digital connectivity and renewable energy integration is poised to have a positive impact on both Australia and Fiji, fostering economic growth and advancing technological advancements in the region.
