“End of an Era: Mike Friday Steps Down as USA Men’s Sevens Coach”

Mike Friday has announced his departure as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a transformative ten-year tenure. The 52-year-old former England sevens player, who has led the team since 2014, made the decision following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

During his time in charge, Friday guided the USA team through three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens. When he took over, the team had slim prospects for Olympic qualification.

He informed the players and staff of his decision at the start of the 2024 season. Friday reflected on his journey, stating that he began with a program that seemed nearly finished, embracing the challenge with enthusiasm.

“The journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” he expressed. “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones,” the former coach shared.

As Friday prepares for new opportunities and more time with his family, his impact on the team and American rugby sevens is significant and will be remembered.
