Empowerment Through Pottery: The Women of Lawai Forge a Brighter Future

Women in the village of Lawai are actively engaged in pottery-making, a craft that has provided them with artistic expression and economic opportunities. While there has been a reduction in the number of participants, the artisans are focusing on better utilizing their land for productive purposes.

The Naboumasimasi Pottery Club, led by Makelesi Adivugalei, reflects the community’s spirit and resilience. Over the years, the women have transitioned from traditional clay harvesting outside to establishing a dedicated space for their work, which began around 1979 when Makelesi herself got involved.

A woman from Tailevu also joined the club, helping to establish a community house for the artisans. Initially, they faced challenges in getting their pottery recognized, but the hard work has paid off, with products now being sold often to nearby hotels in Sigatoka.

The women have progressed from using a small shed to a larger workshop that supports their crafting and enables them to showcase their skills to visitors interested in their handmade items. Currently, 22 women are part of the club.

Among them are five senior women in their 70s, who have gained a reputation for their pottery skills due to their long experience. They use various types of clay available locally, showcasing their creativity by crafting not just traditional pots but also smaller items such as decorative pieces and household tools.

Makelesi highlighted the quality of work produced, which could serve as a significant source of income for their community and families. The artisans frequently visit local hotels to market their products, raising awareness about their craftsmanship and the beauty of Lawai.

There is a shared belief within the community that preserving and promoting these crafting traditions is vital, especially since they were passed down from earlier generations.

“Without unity, we cannot achieve anything,” is a strong message that resonates with the artisans, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their endeavors.

Monthly, the women gather whatever proceeds they earn from their sales, which contributes to their households and local development projects.

The funds earned are essential for community improvements and enhancing their livelihoods, providing a foundation for future growth in their businesses.

Makelesi expressed the need for government support to assist the women in expanding their operations and gaining greater visibility outside their village.

She encourages the younger generation to pursue education vigorously, as it is essential for their futures and can be a gateway to better financial stability in the long run.
