The government is ramping up its efforts to combat drug abuse, sending a clear message to students nationwide: “Say no to drugs.” During a recent address at Vunimono High School, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad underscored the importance of education as a vital tool in the fight against substance abuse.

Professor Prasad encouraged students to prioritize healthy choices and harness their educational pursuits to shape a more promising future. He stressed that a supportive environment, such as schools, is critical in tackling the growing drug crisis that threatens the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and society at large.

His message was emphatic: drugs are a menace capable of destroying lives and families. “It will destroy your mom and dad. It will destroy your families. It will destroy your societies. It will destroy a country,” he warned, urging students to share this message with peers to help foster collective resistance against drug culture.

Assuring students that the government is committed to combating drug trafficking, Professor Prasad mentioned that law enforcement agencies have been given strict directives to crack down on all levels of the drug trade. Statistics from the Fiji Police reveal that in May alone, there were 143 drug-related cases, marking a concerning 13 percent increase from previous months.

The police have also amplified their initiatives, calling for public vigilance as they work together with communities to mitigate this escalating threat. The collaboration between government officials, law enforcement, and the community may lead to a more robust approach in safeguarding youth from the dangers of drug abuse.

As these initiatives unfold, there’s a hopeful perspective: with concerted efforts from all sectors of society, including education and law enforcement, the community can aspire to create a healthier, safer environment that empowers young people to make better choices and build a brighter future.
