The Youth and Sports Ministry’s (MOYS) coordinator for the Lesu Ki Vale operation, Kaminieli Matai Sadrata, has rejected allegations of “staged aid” and “exploitation” made against their outreach efforts, as reported in a recent Fiji Sun article. The piece, titled “End Poverty Tourism,” featured critiques from Inoke Drauna, founder of the charity organization Aruka Fiji, who accused the government of leveraging vulnerable communities for political gain.

In response, Mr. Sadrata asserted that the representations made in the article were misleading and inaccurate. He stated that the Lesu Ki Vale initiative, which aims to support and rehabilitate vulnerable youth, is a legitimate development program committed to empowering participants rather than a politically motivated endeavor. He emphasized the ministry’s dedication to addressing complex social issues and the respectful treatment of individuals involved in their programs.

“These are not ‘staged aid’ events for political gain, as the article alleges,” he remarked, affirming their mission to aid vulnerable citizens with integrity and transparency. Mr. Sadrata also criticized the article’s failure to acknowledge the significant positive outcomes of their initiative, and he underlined the importance of informed and fair scrutiny regarding the ministry’s work.

Drawing from similar articles, the MOYS has consistently focused on the rehabilitation and empowerment of marginalized youth, with notable successes highlighted by Minister Jese Saukuru in previous statements. His commitment encourages a hopeful outlook for the future of at-risk youth, especially with community engagement efforts, such as music therapy and sports initiatives led by local figures. This collaborative approach has been shown to create meaningful change and support a brighter future for Fiji’s fragile youth populations.

In conclusion, the MOYS reiterates its commitment to uplifting marginalized communities through sincere development efforts focused on long-term positive impact. The collaboration with community leaders and organizations continues to foster hope for those in need.
