Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu has emphasized the crucial need for empowering young individuals with the necessary skills for a sustainable career in agriculture, thereby enhancing the nation’s food production capabilities. Speaking at the centennial celebration of the Navuso Agriculture Technical Institute (NATI) in Naitasiri, Mr. Rayalu noted the historic complexities in the relationship between the government and the Methodist Church, which operates NATI. Past disagreements have resulted in interruptions to the institution’s operation, negatively impacting food production in Fiji.
Mr. Rayalu argued that it is unacceptable for Fiji to continue relying on imported food that could be cultivated locally. He expressed that a collective effort is essential to train young people, consequently increasing local food production.
He encouraged Fijians to embrace opportunities in agriculture by acquiring skills through government scholarships and programs designed to attract youth to the sector. Recognizing the failures of past farming businesses often linked to a lack of proper standards, he urged the next generation of farmers to take advantage of the tools and support available to them.
Mr. Rayalu pointed out that with diligent training and successful practices in farming, graduates could draw potential investors necessary for advancing their farming operations, ultimately benefiting the economy and food security.
This initiative not only seeks to improve Fiji’s agricultural landscape but also aims to provide a hopeful path for young individuals, reinforcing the notion that with the right training and support, a sustainable future in farming is attainable. By fostering a strong foundation in agriculture, Fiji has the opportunity to become more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports, enhancing national resilience and food security.
