Women have been urged to support youth interested in entrepreneurship.
Losana Marama, a representative from West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, spoke to attendees at a women’s conference held at Gurukul Primary School in Saweni, Lautoka, highlighting the benefits of the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) program.
Ms. Marama explained that the scheme’s purpose is to offer grants to young entrepreneurs with innovative and viable project ideas. She noted that the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport provides financial backing of up to $30,000 for successful applicants aged between 18 and 40, enabling them to develop or enhance their unique business concepts.
“If your child has creative and innovative ideas, they can apply for this funding,” Ms. Marama encouraged. “Often they come across business ideas on TikTok that are not implemented in Fiji; they can approach us, and we will assist them in securing this funding.”
She emphasized that the $30,000 available is a grant, not a loan, and is fully funded. “If you notice a skill in your child, strive to motivate and empower them,” she stated.
Ms. Marama also acknowledged the vital role young entrepreneurs play in boosting the economy, urging parents and guardians to inspire their children to become “job creators” instead of “job seekers.”
