Former national basketball player Dale Wise Sauqaqa is leading a commendable initiative aimed at boosting female participation in basketball across Fiji. Working alongside a team of former players, including Estelle Kainamoli and Sera Vugakoto from Basketball Fiji, Sauqaqa recently held an engaging basketball program at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva. The event saw a remarkable turnout of young girls, all eager to learn and participate in the sport.

Sauqaqa, serving as the lead coordinator for Go Connections Fiji, articulated a broader vision for the initiative. “We’re trying to get as many girls interested not only in basketball but to take up sports in general,” he emphasized, pointing out the vital role of physical activity in creating a healthy balance against excessive screen time. His initiative presents parents with a constructive avenue to encourage their daughters to explore sporting opportunities, helping to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.

Catering to girls aged between 6 to 10, the program focused on fundamental skills such as dribbling, shooting, and passing. The growing participation reflects a positive trend as Sauqaqa notes a rise in female engagement in sports, a crucial step towards developing future talent.

This effort aligns with other initiatives in Fiji, like the introduction of girls’ rugby at the national Kaji competition, signaling a movement towards amplifying opportunities for female athletes in various sports disciplines. With continued support and community involvement, the prospects for women’s sports in Fiji appear bright, paving the way for increased inclusivity and empowerment for young female athletes.

Such developments indicate a significant and hopeful transformation in the sports landscape, as programs like Sauqaqa’s inspire and uplift the next generation, encouraging them to not only participate but excel in their sporting endeavors. The future of women in sports looks increasingly promising, thanks to these proactive initiatives.
