The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is currently conducting an off-season athletics training camp aimed at young athletes, particularly those from smaller schools, to enhance their skills during the holiday break. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that many talented students lack proper training and suffer injuries due to unfit conditions during competitions.
Tafao’ou initiated the camp following his observations of athletes struggling at previous events, with some even fainting due to inadequate fitness. This prompted him to propose the training camp, which has a nominal weekly fee of $20 and has attracted about 35 participants since it began weeks before Christmas. The program will run for six weeks and conclude on January 24, just before the inter-house competitions scheduled for February.
Participants benefit from coaching by experienced former athletes, including Olympic champion Albert Miler and sprinting standout Banuve Tabakaucoro, who provide training in high jumps, sprints, and other athletics disciplines. The camp’s focus is on teaching fundamental skills such as block starts and endurance running, along with instilling discipline and time management, which parents have noted positively impacts their children’s routines.
As the camp progresses, many young athletes who were previously intimidated by their peers are now expressing excitement about competing in upcoming events. Tafao’ou emphasized the camp’s commitment to inclusivity, inviting further participation from all aspiring athletes, regardless of their background.
This initiative is not just about preparing for competitions; it aims to inspire a love for the sport and foster community spirit among young athletes. By providing access to quality coaching, the FSC off-season athletics training camp holds the promise of elevating the standard of athletics in Fiji and nurturing future champions, benefiting both local and international sporting platforms.
In conclusion, the FSC off-season athletics training camp represents a significant commitment to developing young talent in Fiji, combining skill training with personal growth in a supportive environment. With continued participation, the potential for success among these promising athletes appears bright, contributing positively to the future of athletics in the region.
