The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is currently running an off-season athletics training camp designed to provide young athletes, particularly those from smaller schools, with critical training opportunities during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou initiated this program in response to a noticeable lack of structured training faced by many talented students, which often leads to injuries and diminished performance during competitions.
Tafao’ou noted the distressing sight of young athletes struggling or even fainting during events due to inadequate physical fitness. This observation prompted him to propose the off-season camp, which has received positive engagement, attracting around 35 participants since it launched three weeks ahead of Christmas, charging a nominal fee of $20 per week. The camp is set to run until January 24, just before inter-house competitions that are scheduled for February.
During the camp, students are coached by experienced former athletes, including Olympic champion Albert Miller and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro. Participants are being taught essential athletic skills such as block starts and endurance techniques, alongside vital life skills like discipline and time management, which have been noted by parents as improvements in their children’s routines.
Tafao’ou emphasized the camp’s commitment to inclusivity, encouraging participation from students who might be intimidated by peers with more experience. The structured environment is instilling confidence in these young athletes, who are now eager to compete in upcoming events. He invites more young athletes to join the camp, assuring them that they will gain considerable benefits before the upcoming inter-house competitions.
Overall, the FSC off-season athletics training camp serves as an important platform for nurturing young talent in Fiji. By focusing on skill development and fostering a supportive community, this initiative aims to empower aspiring athletes, paving the way for a bright future in athletics. The enthusiasm and dedication of these young participants hold the promise of elevating the nation’s athletics on both local and international stages.
As this program progresses, it not only enhances athletic performance but also cultivates life skills that will benefit the participants in various aspects of their lives.
