The recently held Women’s and Agriculture Expo in Lomolomo, Vanuabalavu, has invigorated the local economy by bringing together participants from over ten villages, including Cikobia and Tuvuca. Organized by the Vanuabalavu Day Committee, the expo aimed to enhance livelihoods through traditional skills and small-scale business ventures.

During the event, more than 50 women showcased their handicrafts, which included woven mats, crochet items, knitting, scented coconut oil, and local delicacies such as vakasakera. Committee member Tomi Finau emphasized the significance of the event, noting that it provided women with an opportunity to earn income and gain exposure by featuring their work in the media.

Participants expressed enthusiasm over showcasing their crafts, highlighting how this platform not only helps improve their financial situation but also fosters community spirit. Many women remarked on the camaraderie and shared experiences that the expo offered, reinforcing the idea that this event transcends mere commerce—it is a celebration of talent and determination.

In line with previous expos, many vendors experienced notable financial success, with individuals like Daulako Mavoa from Boitaci Village stating she earned over $300 from selling various products, including coconut oil and baskets. The continued enthusiasm and hard work of women in the region demonstrate the potential for economic growth and empowerment through such events.

Local businesses also participated, offering logistical support and advice, further solidifying the partnership between community artisans and larger enterprises, paving the way for enhanced market access.

The two-day event concluded with a strong turnout and strong community support, showcasing the wealth of talent among Vanuabalavu’s women. Looking ahead, the upcoming Bose Vanua promises to continue this momentum in promoting local culture and entrepreneurship. This hopeful beginning signals a promising future for the women of Vanuabalavu, underscoring the importance of continued support, training, and community collaboration in fostering sustainable development.
