The Get Into Rugby (GIR) Plus program is making a significant impact on young women rugby players at Namata District School in Tailevu. Recently, the school participated in a primary school tournament held at Bidesi Ground in Laucala Bay, Suva, demonstrating the positive influence of this initiative.
Team coach Neli Nabogi highlighted the program’s role in empowering students, noting a shift in their willingness to share their experiences. “Initially, the children were hesitant to speak about their challenges, but as they engaged with the program’s life skills and anti-violence messages, they gradually opened up,” Nabogi stated.
The GIR Plus festival not only showcased athletic talent but also emphasized holistic development through sports. Despite having only one week to prepare, the Namata team’s participation reflects their commitment to growth and teamwork.
Nabogi, who introduced the GIR Plus program to Namata in 2018, recalls the obstacles she faced as a female sporting official in a male-dominated environment. Her passion for rugby and dedication to teaching children has driven her success in promoting women’s participation in the sport.
