Empowering Women Through Craft: The Rise of Naboumasi-masi Pottery Club

In Lawai, women are actively engaging in pottery, selling handcrafted items to improve their livelihoods. The Naboumasi-masi Pottery Club, led by Makelesi Adivugalei, has made significant steps in supporting local women artisans to enhance their craft and financial independence.

Since its inception in 1979, the club has focused on pottery work, providing a space for women to gather and create. Amidst their work, members have established their capabilities, including crafting various products such as traditional clay items and decorative pieces.

Currently, 22 women are part of the club, contributing to the local economy by creating unique pottery. These women, some of whom are in their 70s, are dedicated to preserving their art form, which is deeply rooted in the local culture of Lawai.

As demand for their artisanal products grows, the group has expanded beyond just pottery to include other crafts such as weaving and sculpting, showcasing their versatility and creativity. This initiative not only brings them financial reward but also fosters community spirit and cooperation among the women.

Makelesi emphasizes the importance of continuing traditional crafts to secure a sustainable income for their families and community. The pottery crafted by these women is not only a source of income but also a representation of their heritage and cultural identity, further enriching the area’s cultural landscape.

The group actively promotes their handicrafts to nearby hotels, providing a unique local experience for visitors while bolstering their economic standing. Acknowledging the support from the community and the need for continuous improvement in their craft, Makelesi encourages local women to engage in education and skill development, ensuring a thriving future for the next generation.

Through their efforts, the women of Lawai are committed to enhancing their livelihoods while preserving their cultural traditions and sharing their heritage with others.
