For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku convened at Naroi, Moala, for a mini-craft show aimed at highlighting their handmade products and promoting empowerment.

Organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, this event served as an important platform for women to share ideas, learn new skills, and showcase their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Participants displayed an array of handcrafted items, including sulu and Jamba, as well as fine mats, handmade crafts, and fresh produce.

The gathering celebrated traditional Fijian artistry, emphasizing the diverse talents and resourcefulness of women from the maritime islands. Draunidalo, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, officiated the event and expressed his gratitude toward the women, noting their essential role in society. He remarked, “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions extend beyond their homes. Events like these empower them economically and socially, encouraging self-reliance and innovation.”

Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, expressed her appreciation for the initiative, sharing, “Today, we woke up early, prepared our families, and made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. For the women of Maloku, we are selling sulu, Jamba, and honey products from our women’s group project.”

Unise Vosataki from Vadra highlighted the significance of such events for women in remote areas. She noted, “Some of us can’t afford to travel to Suva during the Women’s National Expo, but today we are grateful to the government for this opportunity to sell our handicrafts.” She further emphasized that this platform enables women to develop entrepreneurial skills and strengthen their networks.

The inaugural mini-craft show in Naroi underscores the government’s commitment to empowering women in rural and maritime communities. By creating opportunities for women to showcase their talents and generate income, the government seeks to promote gender equality and support sustainable community development.

This event not only fosters local entrepreneurship but also strengthens the community by celebrating the talents of women, paving the way for future initiatives that uplift and support their ventures. The hope is that such gatherings will continue to inspire women and create a ripple effect of empowerment throughout the region.
