A group of women from the Waibau Women’s Club, established in 2019, has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for families in the Waibau area. Led by Makereta Nofoimuli, this organization aims to support women and girls by efficiently utilizing community land to enhance family nutrition and sustainable living.

Currently, the club has 11 active members who are working on six gardening plots. These plots not only provide food but also foster community support with members helping each other in their gardening efforts. The women have been successful in cultivating various crops, including dalo (taro), tavioka (cassava), kawai (banana), kumala (sweet potato), and ginger.

One of their significant achievements this year includes expanding their cultivated land to produce yaqona (kava), hoping to harvest it in the next two years. Additionally, they are also growing a variety of vegetables such as kaveti (cabbage), baigani (eggplant), karote (carrot), kiukaba (pumpkin), and rokete (rocket) to ensure a diverse diet.

The club expresses gratitude to the public and the Ministry of Forestry for their support, which has contributed to their gardening initiatives. They meet regularly to work on their plots, and through their ongoing projects, they aim to uplift their communities financially and nutritionally.

Despite challenges posed by climate change, these women remain committed to improving their circumstances. They encourage others to seize available opportunities and seek assistance to enhance their lives and those of young girls in their communities.

This inspiring story highlights the resilience and determination of women coming together to create tangible benefits for their families and communities. Their efforts not only improve food security but also empower them to take an active role in their future.

In summary, the Waibau Women’s Club represents a hopeful initiative that combines agriculture, community building, and women’s empowerment, showing that collective action can lead to improved living standards.
