Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection in Fiji, is advocating for intensified support for women and girls as essential leaders in disaster and climate resilience efforts. During a recent donor roundtable, she stressed the importance of integrating gender considerations into disaster planning and resource allocation across the Pacific.

Kiran highlighted the contributions of over 700 women, including those with disabilities, who have actively participated in shaping early warning systems and national policies. Additionally, she noted that more than 160 women from 16 villages are employing disaster-resilient business strategies.

She acknowledged Australia’s assistance through the UN Women-led Women’s Resilience to Disasters Programme and pointed out that over 50 government agencies and women’s organizations in Fiji have enhanced their capacities to factor in women’s needs in disaster management efforts.

Kiran affirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing early action and gender inclusion as the region grapples with escalating climate-related challenges. Her push for acknowledging women’s roles in resilience efforts reflects a broader understanding of the value they bring to community preparedness and recovery.

This initiative aligns well with her previous commitments to address gender-based violence and emphasize the importance of community involvement and collaboration with various stakeholders, as mentioned in earlier discussions. The proactive measures being undertaken also highlight a hopeful shift towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for all Fijians, fostering resilience against the impacts of climate change and disasters.
