A 58-year-old entrepreneur from Nasolo in Ba, Loraini Bula, embodies the transformative power of determination, cultural pride, and community support. A devoted mother of five grown daughters, Ms. Bula has skillfully woven her passion for entrepreneurship with family commitments through her business, Loraini’s Creations.

This vibrant enterprise focuses on hand-printed sarongs that celebrate Fijian and Pacific Island culture. Beyond these unique garments, Ms. Bula has diversified her product offerings to include scented soaps, body oils, and various plants and flowers cultivated in her nursery. By sourcing ingredients locally, she not only crafts beautiful products but also honors Fiji’s rich natural heritage.

A significant turning point in Ms. Bula’s journey was her participation in the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), a program organized by the US Embassy in Fiji. Starting in March, this seven-month program equipped her with essential skills in pricing, marketing, and product value—all previously areas where she had struggled. Reflecting on her past approach to pricing, Ms. Bula shared, “I used to just set prices randomly, not realizing the impact it would have on my business. Now, I understand the importance of customer satisfaction and market standards.”

Her journey is not only a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit but also how it has enabled her to support her family. Two of her daughters are now doctors, symbolizing the sacrifices and hard work she has dedicated to providing them with opportunities.

Looking forward, Ms. Bula remains optimistic about her business’s growth and plans to expand her product line to meet increasing customer demand. She credits the AWE program with giving her the confidence and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of running her business more effectively.

Ms. Bula’s story serves as an inspiration to other women in her community, encouraging them to pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations. “Don’t be afraid to start your own business,” she advises. “We don’t need to depend on others; we can provide for ourselves. If you have the drive, go for it.”

Her narrative stands as a hopeful example of how education, support, and resilience can lead to not only personal success but also uplift entire communities. Through her continued dedication, Ms. Bula illustrates that with hard work and the right resources, women can truly make a lasting impact in their lives and the lives of those around them.
