Empowering Women: The Heartbeat of Fiji’s Economic Growth

Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran highlighted the essential contributions of women to society during her address at the 7th National Women’s Expo in Suva. She described women as the backbone of sustainable economic growth, emphasizing their resilience, creativity, and determination across various sectors, including entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, and handicrafts.

Kiran stated, “You are not only here just for economic empowerment or to share your trade; you bring the beautiful traditions and gifts from our ancestors and continue to pass them on to future generations.” This year’s expo theme, “Fijian Women at the Heart of Economic Progress,” aligns with the government’s commitment to empower women with vital resources and supportive policies to enhance their role in economic development.

The First Lady of Fiji, Emily Lalabalavu, also spoke at the event, reinforcing the importance of equal opportunities and resources for women from all backgrounds. She expressed that the expo serves as a critical connection for women to access both domestic and global markets, boosting their livelihoods and benefitting their families and communities.

Lalabalavu brought attention to systemic issues faced by women, such as social norms and health barriers, calling for effective policies that promote inclusive economic empowerment. Both speakers inspired over 300 women who participated by showcasing their crafts, representing substantial contributions to the local economy.

Previous expos have illustrated the vital role of women’s entrepreneurship in fostering community growth and resilience. This year’s event continues to cultivate a vision for a future where women are celebrated and empowered, promising brighter prospects for future generations.

The National Women’s Expo not only highlights talent but also reinforces the notion that empowered women propel entire communities forward. With ongoing support, there is optimism for significant advancements in women’s rights and empowerment in Fiji.
