For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku came together at Naroi, Moala, to participate in a Women’s mini-craft show aimed at showcasing their handmade products and promoting empowerment.

This event, organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, served as an essential platform for women to share ideas, learn new skills, and applaud their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Participants displayed an array of items, including traditional Fijian garments like sulu and Jamba, fine mats, handmade crafts, and fresh vegetables and root crops. The gathering not only celebrated Fiji’s rich artisanal heritage but also highlighted the diverse talents and resourcefulness of women from the maritime islands.

Draunidalo, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, officiated at the event and expressed his deep appreciation for the women involved. He noted, “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions extend beyond their homes. Events like these empower them economically and socially, encouraging self-reliance and innovation.”

Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, reflected on the significance of the day. “We woke up early, prepared our families, and made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. We are proud to sell sulu, Jamba, and honey products as part of our women’s group project,” she remarked.

Unise Vosataki from Vadra stressed the importance of local events for women in remote areas. “Some of us can’t afford to travel to Suva during the Women’s National Expo, so we are grateful to the government for this opportunity to sell our handicrafts. This platform allows us to develop entrepreneurial skills and strengthen our networks,” she stated.

The mini-craft show, being the first of its kind in Naroi, reflects the Ministry’s commitment to empowering women in rural and maritime communities. By providing these opportunities for women to showcase their talents and earn income, the government is fostering gender equality and supporting sustainable community development.

This event symbolizes hope and progress for women in the region, emphasizing their role in economic development and community leadership. By coming together to share their skills and creativity, they are not only uplifting one another but also paving the way for future generations of women to thrive.

Overall, the event inspires a positive vision for the empowerment of women in Fiji, proving that when women support each other, they can create impactful change.
