A new capacity-building initiative aimed at empowering women through effective leadership and communication skills has been launched for over 30 participants from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu. This program was inaugurated at the GCC lounge in Suva and will span two days.

Salote Nawalowalo, president of Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu, emphasized the importance of equipping women leaders from all nine districts of Kadavu with essential skills. Nawalowalo noted that women often face challenges in their leadership roles, as their contributions may be undervalued, leading to a lack of confidence in decision-making and sharing ideas.

She pointed out that poor communication between leaders and their groups at the tikina level negatively impacts productivity. Important decisions made in meetings often fail to reach group members due to ineffective communication strategies by leaders.

The decision to implement this training program arose during their last annual general meeting after recognizing that some women were struggling to fulfill their roles. Nawalowalo mentioned that the last similar initiative occurred in 2017, and sadly, many participants from that program are no longer with them.

Nawalowalo called for unity among women to create an empowering environment and support one another amidst challenges. She noted that women constitute half of the population and urged them to collaborate with men in a spirit of cooperation. She emphasized the necessity of stepping out of comfort zones and fostering positive relationships among women rather than engaging in negative criticism.

Moreover, she encouraged all Soqosoqo Vakamarama groups across the nation to utilize available funding to participate in training programs designed for women.

This initiative marks a significant step towards building a stronger, more supportive network for women leaders in Kadavu, highlighting the collective strength and potential of women’s empowerment in the community.

Overall, this positive movement not only aims to enhance individual leadership skills but also strives to promote collaboration and a supportive culture among women.
