Kelera Vela has showcased the potential for women to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields during the graduation ceremony at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa. Vela, a former volunteer firefighter with seven years of service at the National Fire Authority stations in Taveuni and Labasa, was one of 105 graduates celebrated at the event.
At just 30 years old and a mother of two, Vela hails from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata. She recently earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. Expressing her determination, Vela stated, “Female electricians can do as well as males, and I want to be one of them.”
After completing Year 13 at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa, Vela transitioned into volunteering as a firefighter, later taking time off to raise her children, aged three and nine. She credited her husband, Salato Ramoce, who works at Bula Earthworks, for supporting her return to education.
“I faced the challenge of juggling roles as a mother, wife, and student, but I persevered thanks to the encouragement from my husband and the understanding of my trainers,” she noted. Vela emphasized that a supportive learning environment can inspire students to complete their education.
Encouraging other women, she urges them to pursue their desired careers, emphasizing that gender should not limit one’s professional ambitions, even in industries where men predominantly hold roles.
This article highlights a significant narrative of empowerment and gender equality, showcasing Vela as a role model for women striving to break through barriers in various professions. Her story serves as a reminder that with determination and support, women can achieve their goals and excel in any field they choose.
