A woman from Bua, Pritika Raj, is on a journey of empowerment as she launches her own frozen goods canteen, supported by the Northern Development Program. Recently, she received a freezer, a solar battery system, and stock from Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, marking a significant step forward in her business venture.

Raj had initially opened a small canteen using a microloan from South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) but faced challenges that almost led her to abandon her entrepreneurial dreams. However, her determination and training kept her focused on meeting the needs of her community. “Training and grit kept me going,” she stated, highlighting the importance of resilience.

Kamikamica reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting women in business, emphasizing that such initiatives are crucial for creating sustainable success for their families. This aligns with the broader trend seen in Fiji, where many women are leveraging entrepreneurial opportunities to improve their livelihoods and contribute positively to their communities.

Similar inspiring stories include Saleshni Devi from Nadi, who creatively transforms local kumala (sweet potatoes) into a variety of products, and Elena Tinai, who was named SPBD’s Businesswoman of the Year for her success in the fish-selling business. Both stories exemplify the significant impact of community support and innovation, echoing Raj’s own path.

In a country where reliance on imported goods is prevalent, Raj’s efforts to establish her business signify hope and resilience, encouraging other women to embark on entrepreneurial journeys. As these women lift themselves and their families, they play a vital role in promoting local economies and sustainability in Fiji. Their stories serve as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring female entrepreneurs everywhere.
