An apprentice program at the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) is achieving notable success and creating opportunities for women in engineering roles that have traditionally been male-dominated.

One standout participant in this initiative is Siobahn Bogidrau, a 20-year-old electrical fitter apprentice at the Lautoka Mill. Siobahn’s journey reflects a spirit of determination and resilience. “I believe that if you set your goals, work hard, and stay focused, you can achieve anything you set your mind to,” she remarked.

Her experience highlights a powerful message for women across Fiji: the engineering field is not exclusive to men. Although Siobahn did not have female role models in engineering growing up, her interest was sparked during high school career classes. Inspired by the opportunities in the field and motivated by her fellow apprentices, she joined the FSC Apprentice Program in 2024.

The program provides invaluable hands-on experience and technical training essential for growth in engineering and technical fields. Participants receive comprehensive training that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application in key areas like electrical maintenance, mechanical repairs, and process optimization within the sugar industry. This holistic approach not only builds technical skills but also fosters a collaborative community among apprentices.

“FSC has provided me with both on-the-job training and technical skills, making me feel confident in my work every day,” Siobahn noted, adding that the support she has received has been crucial in her journey.

The apprentice program not only sharpens Siobahn’s skills but also ensures she feels valued and understood. “I’ve never felt limited as a woman in this field. The corporation treats all of us equally, and I’m constantly encouraged to keep learning and improving,” she said.

Siobahn’s contributions extend beyond her personal goals; they significantly impact the growth and sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry. “My work as an apprentice will help the sugar industry grow stronger, and that’s a goal I’m proud to be working towards,” she expressed.

Looking to the future, Siobahn is excited to continue her journey at FSC and advance her studies in engineering. “The skills I’m learning now are just the beginning,” she stated.

For young women who may be hesitant to enter male-dominated fields, Siobahn offers empowering advice: “Work towards your goal and don’t give up. Women can achieve just as much as men in any field, including engineering. Believe in yourself and go for it.”

FSC emphasizes the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion within its workforce. The apprentice program is crucial in establishing a welcoming environment for women like Siobahn. As more women enter engineering roles, Siobahn is hopeful about the industry’s future. “It’s great to see women represented in the sugar industry, but I believe even more will join in the future. It’s up to those of us already here to encourage others to take that step,” she said.

The FSC apprentice program is dedicated to developing the next generation of engineers, technicians, and skilled workers and invites all young women passionate about engineering and technical careers to join the transformation taking place within the sugar industry. Applications for the 2025 FSC Apprentice Program will open in November.
