Empowering Women in Engineering: Siobahn’s Inspiring Journey at FSC

An apprenticeship program at the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) is proving effective in promoting women’s participation in engineering, a field traditionally dominated by men. One notable participant is Siobahn Bogidrau, a 20-year-old electrical fitter apprentice at Lautoka Mill.

Siobahn embodies determination and resilience, asserting, “I believe that if you set your goals, work hard, and stay focused, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.” Her journey serves as an inspiration to women across Fiji, conveying the message that the engineering profession is not exclusively for men.

Although Siobahn did not have female role models in engineering during her upbringing, her interest was sparked during career classes at Natabua High School. Encouraged by her peers and motivated by the opportunities in the field, she joined the FSC Apprentice Program in 2024.

The program provides participants with essential hands-on experience and technical training, equipping them for successful careers in engineering and technical roles. The training includes theoretical knowledge and practical applications in critical areas such as electrical maintenance, mechanical repairs, and process optimization within the sugar industry. This comprehensive approach not only enhances technical skills but also builds a strong sense of community and collaboration among apprentices.

“FSC has provided me with both on-the-job training and technical skills, making me feel confident in my work every day,” Siobahn stated, emphasizing the supportive role of the organization in her journey.

The apprenticeship has not only refined Siobahn’s abilities but also fostered a sense of recognition and understanding. “I’ve never felt limited as a woman in this field. The corporation treats all of us equally, and I’m constantly encouraged to keep learning and improving,” she noted.

Siobahn’s contributions extend beyond her personal ambitions, as she plays a vital role in the growth and sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry. “My work as an apprentice will help the sugar industry grow stronger, and that’s a goal I’m proud to be working towards,” she remarked.

As she looks to the future, Siobahn is eager to continue her path at FSC and advance her studies in engineering. “The skills I’m learning now are just the beginning,” she said.

To young women hesitant to enter male-dominated fields, Siobahn encourages them with empowering advice: “Work towards your goal and don’t give up. Women can achieve just as much as men in any field, including engineering. Believe in yourself and go for it.”

FSC emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusion within its workforce. The apprenticeship program is a crucial initiative in creating a supportive environment for women like Siobahn. With the number of women in engineering roles increasing, she remains optimistic. “It’s good to see women represented in the sugar industry, but I believe even more will join in the future. It’s up to those of us already here to encourage others to take that step,” she expressed.

The FSC apprenticeship program is dedicated to developing the next generation of engineers, technicians, and skilled workers. It invites young women with a passion for engineering or technical careers to join and be a part of the ongoing transformation within the sugar industry. Applications for the 2025 FSC Apprentice Program will open in November.
