The Central Division Women’s Expo in Suva is serving as a vital platform for women entrepreneurs to showcase their businesses and boost their economic autonomy. Over 200 women are participating in the event, which highlights the importance of networking, marketing products, and reaching new customer bases.

39-year-old Mariana Lewatu, a home-based tailor, expressed how her business has significantly supported her family for three years. She stated, “For me, the tailoring has been our backbone for my family because it has supported my family in many ways. I have four children, and we’ve grown with my business. It helps with my family needs and my children’s education.”

Similarly, Asinate Naureure from Serua, who has been selling printed fabrics since 2013, mentioned the profitability of her endeavors, stating, “It helps my husband because he’s the only breadwinner in the family.” Her comments reflect a common sentiment among women participating in expos across Fiji, which have been instrumental in empowering female entrepreneurs to supplement family incomes and gain invaluable business experience.

The current Expo mirrors previous events, such as the Women’s Expo in Vanuabalavu, which successfully showcased various crafts and allowed women to share their entrepreneurial journeys. At past expos, participants shared stories of resilience and financial growth, emphasizing the potential for economic development when women are given equal opportunities to express their talents.

Such initiatives not only uplift the individual participants but also contribute to broader community benefits. The participation of women at expos highlights their critical role in driving economic progress within their communities. Overall, events like the Women’s Expo affirm a hopeful narrative for women’s empowerment in Fiji, reinforcing the message that when women flourish, entire communities benefit.

The essence of these expos is not merely commercial; they serve as community gatherings that foster collaboration, growth, and a shared commitment to improving livelihoods for future generations.
