Empowering Women: First-Ever Mini-Craft Show Turns Heads in Moala

Women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku recently came together for an inaugural Women’s mini-craft show held at Naroi, Moala. This event, organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, aimed to empower women by providing a platform to showcase their handmade products.

The mini-craft show allowed participants to display a variety of items, including sulu, Jamba, fine mats, and crafts, alongside fresh vegetables and root crops. This gathering not only celebrated the rich traditional artistry of Fiji but also highlighted the diverse skills and creativity of women from the maritime islands.

During the event, Draunidalo, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, conveyed appreciation for the women’s essential contributions to society. He stated, “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions extend beyond their homes. Events like these empower them economically and socially, encouraging self-reliance and innovation.”

Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, expressed her gratitude for the initiative, noting that the women worked diligently to showcase their handicrafts, including sulu, Jamba, and honey products from their community project.

Unise Vosataki from Vadra highlighted the significance of such events for women in remote areas, sharing her regret that many cannot afford to travel to the capital for larger expos. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to sell their items locally, emphasizing how the event helps women develop entrepreneurial skills and build networks.

This historic event marks a significant commitment by the Ministry to empower women in rural and maritime communities. By facilitating platforms for women to display their talents and generate income, the initiative represents progress toward gender equality and sustainable community development.
