Women from the villages of Nasoki, Vadra, Keteira, and Cakova in Moala are embracing fresh opportunities through a groundbreaking financial literacy and entrepreneurship program spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The initiative aims to equip women with essential skills in bookkeeping, marketing, branding, inventory management, and savings strategies. The training integrates group discussions that encourage collaboration, enabling participants to share insights and learn from one another’s experiences.
According to JICA volunteer Akemi Nagahara, the significance of this program cannot be overstated; financial literacy and effective business management are pivotal for establishing sustainable livelihoods. By participating in this program, women are empowered to take charge of their financial futures, leading to enhancements in their quality of life and that of their families.
One of the participants, Jiajiana Vulaono from Cakova village, shared her personal transformation through the training. “Before the training, I found it challenging to start a small business. Now, I feel confident in keeping records and planning ahead. This knowledge will fundamentally change how I support my family,” she expressed.
Additionally, the program included information on essential social welfare services, highlighting various support programs available to the women. Awareness initiatives were also conducted by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji Police, and the Department of Children, underlining the comprehensive nature of the initiative.
This effort is a testament to the government’s commitment to advancing gender equality, empowering women within communities, and combating poverty, illustrating a hopeful path towards a more equitable future for all.
