Empowering Women: Fiji’s MSME Trailblazers Honored at SPBD Awards

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere emphasized the significant contribution of women to Fiji’s economy during the 14th South Pacific Business Development Foundation Day and Businesswoman of the Year Awards 2024 at the Vodafone Arena. He noted that there are 5,500 registered women engaged in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), alongside 18,742 self-employed women and 4,650 women involved in handicrafts.

Elena Tinai from Saru Centre in Lautoka was honored with this year’s SPBD Businesswoman of the Year award for her outstanding contributions to the community. President Ratu Wiliame pointed out that women-led enterprises focus on creating sustainable livelihoods, addressing social challenges, and supporting future generations.

He highlighted that this sector accounts for approximately 82 percent of registered businesses in Fiji, playing a crucial role in the nation’s economic framework. With more than 30,000 registered MSMEs, Ratu Wiliame described the sector as the backbone of the economy, driving growth, fostering innovation, and promoting diversification, especially in rural regions.
