Fifteen women market vendors from the Suva Municipal Market have successfully completed a three-day training on cooperative business operations at the Ministry of Cooperatives Headquarters in Suva. This training was designed to enhance their understanding of cooperative governance, financial management, and strategies for long-term sustainability.

Iosefo Koroidimuri, the Director and Registrar of Cooperatives, urged the participants to implement the skills they acquired and continue building upon their collective efforts. He underscored that only five percent of businesses in Fiji are owned by the indigenous iTaukei people and stressed the importance of cooperatives in promoting economic empowerment within this community.

Mere Baleidriti, a member of the cooperative, shared that the training was instrumental in clarifying the roles of members, highlighting the significance of responsibility, cooperation, and unity in achieving success. The training equipped these businesswomen with critical skills in leadership, financial literacy, digital tools, and compliance, preparing them to expand their business ventures and contribute to grassroots economic growth.

This initiative aligns with recent training programs across Fiji, which include comprehensive empowerment efforts for cooperatives. For instance, similar training sessions in Narocake and Muana-i-Ra have focused on entrepreneurship and resource sustainability, showcasing the growth and relevance of cooperatives in enhancing local economies. The government has expressed its commitment to supporting women-led cooperatives, which are proving essential in bolstering socio-economic progress.

These ongoing activities present a hopeful outlook for the future of cooperative businesses in Fiji. By empowering individuals through training and support, there is a clear pathway for sustainable economic development and community resilience. The dedication to cooperative models signifies a collective move towards greater economic independence and the preservation of cultural identities.
