A training session titled “Practical Bookkeeping and Understanding Financial Statements Training,” organized by Business Assistance Fiji (BAF), aims to cultivate a more transparent, resilient, and sustainable business community in Fiji. Recently, 29 participants from Tavua, Lautoka, and Nadi engaged in the program, which seeks to enhance the financial skills of women entrepreneurs in the Western division.

The training emphasized essential financial management competencies, such as accurately recording daily transactions, understanding profit and loss statements, interpreting balance sheets, and managing cash flow. Kala Wati, a micro-entrepreneur from Navaki settlement in Nadi, shared her motivations for joining the program, expressing the desire to improve her business record-keeping. Ms. Wati now feels empowered to better track her cash flow and managing her expenses and savings as she mainly produces eco-bags, pillowcases, and cushion covers.

Nitika Singh, acting general manager of BAF, praised the dedication of the participants, recognizing their commitment to enhancing their financial literacy and bookkeeping skills. She described these skills as essential for sustainable business growth and acknowledged the support from Business Link Pacific (BLP) in bolstering the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) ecosystem in Fiji.

As BAF prepares for its 2025 MSME Conference, it remains focused on bridging knowledge gaps and supporting women-led businesses, reinforcing its mission to foster transparent and sustainable practices throughout the country. With increased financial knowledge among women, there is hope for a more resilient business environment in Fiji.

This initiative resonates with similar efforts discussed in other articles, such as the Women’s Finance Exchange (WFE) and the Access to Finance program, which aim to uplift local women entrepreneurs through enhanced financial capabilities. The collective focus on training and education indicates a growing recognition of the importance of financial literacy as a cornerstone of economic empowerment for women and broader communities in Fiji.
