Jenny Seeto, the chairperson of Investment Fiji, has underscored the importance of fostering confidence and critical thinking among women in the accounting sector during a recent panel discussion organized by the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) in Suva. In sharing her personal journey, Seeto highlighted some of the internal challenges women face, particularly the issues of self-doubt and insufficient skills.
Seeto remarked, “I feel the barriers are ourselves, our own selves… if we lack the confidence in what we do, and we don’t have the necessary knowledge, skills, experience, we are not confident.” Her views were reinforced by Veilawa Rereiwasaliwa, CEO of Merchant Finance Limited, who acknowledged the progress made in the financial services sector towards gender inclusion. However, he pointed out the persistent lack of mentorship opportunities, stemming from a shortage of female leaders who can guide younger women. He advocated for the recruitment of women at junior levels to establish a strong pipeline of future female leaders.
Akanisi Nabalarua, founder of Baka Books, also participated in the discussion, noting that societal pressures and family roles often prevent women from asserting their professional aspirations. Nabalarua stressed that mentorship is crucial not just for personal growth but as a cultural tool to enable women to advance into decision-making roles. She called attention to socioeconomic barriers and highlighted the importance of initiatives such as Marama Finance at Merchant Finance Limited, which are designed to empower women from marginalized communities.
These conversations occur as part of a broader movement in Fiji to enhance women’s representation and influence. Recently, FICA hosted a Women in Leadership program, supporting various organizations’ ongoing efforts to empower women in leadership positions. Recent statistical data indicates a promising rise in female membership within FICA, reflecting the organization’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment.
As Fiji continues to recognize the integral roles women play in economic development, there is optimism that concerted efforts will lead to significant progress in gender equality and empowerment, ultimately benefiting society at large. The persistent dialogues and initiatives highlight an evolving understanding of the vital contributions that women offer to the business sector and the economy overall.
