At the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development (CATD) in Nadave, a remarkable celebration took place as 111 students proudly graduated, marking a significant milestone for the institution dedicated to empowering Fijian communities through practical skills education. This year’s graduation was particularly notable as it represented the largest cohort in the history of the institution.

Among the graduates were five young women who symbolize the shift towards inclusivity in fields historically dominated by men. Salote Tadokai, an Assistant Trainer in Sustainable Boat Building, emphasized the importance of welcoming women into trades often considered male-oriented. She shared encouraging insights on the growing interest among young women in pursuing careers in these areas, highlighting the institution’s commitment to ensuring that girls remain in school and gain valuable skills.

Graduate Akosita Talei, who earned her Certificate III in Welding and Fabrication, expressed deep appreciation for the support of her family and her faith. “I feel happy after the struggles I’ve been through,” she stated, recognizing the challenges faced along her journey and the importance of family in overcoming them.

Eceni Tanumi, another graduate, offered advice to youths unsure about their educational paths, encouraging them to consider the opportunities available at CATD in Nadave as a way to achieve a better life. This year’s graduation theme, “Celebrating the Future of iTaukei Innovation & Excellence,” was clearly manifested in the success stories of these graduates, emphasizing the potential for positive change within their communities.

The continuous support from institutions like CATD is crucial in progressing toward less disparity in technical fields and fostering a brighter future for younger generations in Fiji. The graduates’ achievements not only highlight their personal journeys but also inspire others to pursue their ambitions, reinforcing the belief that education and empowerment can lead to transformative change.
