A new capacity-building initiative aimed at empowering women has been launched by the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu. The program, unveiled at the GCC lounge in Suva, is set to benefit over 30 women by providing training in effective leadership and communication skills.
Salote Nawalowalo, the organization’s president, highlighted the importance of this two-day event, which seeks to empower female leaders across the nine districts of Kadavu. According to Ms. Nawalowalo, women often encounter challenges in their leadership roles, where their contributions and decisions may not be taken seriously. This atmosphere can lead to decreased confidence among women, causing them to hesitate in voicing their ideas or concerns.
She pointed out that ineffective communication between leaders and group members has been a significant factor contributing to reduced productivity. Decisions made in meetings frequently fail to reach the broader membership, primarily due to a lack of effective communication strategies.
Reflecting on past initiatives, Ms. Nawalowalo noted that the last program of this nature occurred in 2017, and many past participants have since passed away. Thus, the decision to host this current training was made during their last Annual General Meeting, emphasizing a need for renewal and engagement among women leaders.
In her remarks, Ms. Nawalowalo encouraged women to unite, fostering an environment of empowerment and support to counteract negativity. She stressed that women constitute half of the population and should leverage this to collaborate with men, as well. Furthermore, she called on women to step out of their comfort zones and to support each other, emphasizing the need for positivity over divisiveness.
Ms. Nawalowalo also urged Soqosoqo Vakamarama groups nationwide to utilize available funding to introduce similar training programs, reinforcing the message of empowerment and collective growth.
This program not only aims to enhance leadership skills but also serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity and mutual support among women. By equipping women with the tools they need to lead effectively, the initiative paves the way for improved communication and decision-making in their communities, fostering a brighter, more collaborative future.
