Women in the villages of Nasoki, Vadra, Keteira, and Cakova in Moala are now embracing new opportunities thanks to a transformative financial literacy and entrepreneurship program. This initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The primary aim of this program is to empower women with essential skills in bookkeeping, marketing, branding, inventory management, and savings strategies. Participants also engage in group discussions, promoting collaboration and the sharing of insights from personal experiences.
Akemi Nagahara, a JICA volunteer involved in the program, highlighted the importance of financial literacy and effective business management as foundational elements for creating sustainable livelihoods. This initiative not only empowers women to take control of their financial futures but also enhances the living conditions of their families.
One participant, Jiajiana Vulaono from Cakova village, expressed how the training has transformed her confidence in starting a small business. “Before the training, I struggled with starting a small business. Now, I feel confident in keeping records and planning ahead. This knowledge will change how I support my family,” she shared.
The program also provides insights into essential social welfare services, including various support programs and available assistance. Additionally, awareness initiatives are conducted in collaboration with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji Police, and the Department of Children under the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.
This initiative represents the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality, empowering women within the community, and alleviating poverty. By equipping these women with vital skills and knowledge, the program paves the way for a brighter economic future, fostering resilience and independence in their communities.
In summary, this program is not just about financial skills; it’s a step toward transformative change that encourages women to thrive and build a sustainable future for themselves and their families. The ripple effect of such empowerment is likely to uplift entire communities, creating a more equitable society.
