The Chairperson of the Electoral Law Reform Commission, Daniel Fatiaki, emphasized the significance of the quality of consultations over sheer attendance numbers during a recent electoral law review session in Navoci Village, near Nadi. Fatiaki noted a particularly notable turnout of women, indicating that although they were initially hesitant to speak, they participated actively through their spokespersons, providing valuable insights to the commission.

In his remarks, Fatiaki expressed gratitude for the high engagement from women in the discussions, which is seen as a positive shift in community involvement. Professor Waden Narsey, a commission member, pointed out that this consultation marked a first for the commission, as it saw a majority of female attendees. This trend aligns with previous discussions raising concerns about women’s representation in Fiji’s Parliament, where only a handful of women have secured seats in recent elections.

Additionally, discussions on the need for reserved seats for women were highlighted, where past participants have advocated for electoral reforms that would ease the path for women into political positions, enhancing decision-making in governance. This renewed focus on women’s representation in politics reflects a broader societal recognition of the unique contributions women can make in leadership roles, aiming for a more inclusive and equitable political landscape.

The ongoing consultations conducted by the commission represent a hopeful initiative toward fostering civic engagement and reforming Fiji’s electoral laws, ultimately seeking to empower women and enhance overall democracy in the nation. As the commission continues its outreach across various communities, it underscores the collective desire for a political environment that embodies the voices and aspirations of all Fijians.
